When designing a guest room you need to consider that your guests don’t want to feel like guests. They want to feel like they are staying in a resort or hotel room rather than just another room in your house. There are a few simple rules you can follow that will help you achieve this.

Try to use furniture that is similar to the rest of your home but distinctly different. This will help create a feeling that this is the guests own space.

Use the space effectively and don’t clutter it up. I suggest getting a set of full over full bunk beds for your guest room as this will double the sleeping space without taking up too much floor space. There are some really classy designs on the market that don’t look like  kid’s bunk beds. You want to treat your guests like adults and not make them feel like they are little kids. Adult bunk beds are the best way to do this even if you plan to have children sleeping in the guest room.

Choose a different color scheme for this guest room than the rest of the house. This will help to differentiate the room as an independent space.

Respect their room. Don’t barge in or treat the room like a part of your space. You should always knock and ask the guest’s permission to come in. This is not just to avoid awkward situations like barging in on them while they are changing but also to really show them that they are special guests and not just freeloaders.

Don’t use the guest room as an office. You need the guest room to be a standalone room and you don’t want to ever kick our guests out while you do work. If you need an office you should create that in another room. This is an extension of respecting the space as theirs.

Make sure that they have everything they need. Put an alarm clock next to the bunk beds and make sure that it works. You should have towels and extra bedding and pillows available so they don’t have to ask for them. Offer lots of storage space that you don’t use for your own things. Get some bureaus and bedside tables. Make sure that there is an empty closet in the room with lots of hangers for their clothes.

These are just a few simple steps you can use to really make your guest room someplace that people want to stay. At this point, the only problem is making sure they don’t want to move in.
