Living in a small place such as a dorm or an efficiency apartment doesn’t mean that you can’t maximize your living quarters. With a few adjustments, changes can be made without having to knock out a wall or two by using window blinds to maximize your limited living space.

Before deciding which avenue to take, the type of décor, size of window, and which room must be taken into consideration. You want the blinds to complement the interior furnishings as well. Different rooms with small spaces offer a different aesthetic viewpoint when integrating window blinds. A few of these are discussed below:
    • Bathroom. Aluminium blinds would be best for this room, as they’re moisture resistant. Show off this room by placing the blinds within the window frame. This will display less intrusion into the space, bring in the natural light that will open it up dramatically. They will also work wonders in the bathroom in that they will provide the added privacy that is needed.

    • Small kitchen. A venetian blind will create a soft light and because there are so many lines in a kitchen, including the cabinets, stove, and refrigerator, you will need something of this type to open up the space. For a small window you want to bring in as much light as possible, with added colour and design. Let simplicity be the keyword in treatment options to open up the space and give a light and airy feel to the room.

    • Houseboats or RV’s. A vinyl or aluminium blind will be great for this type of living space. They are waterproof, easy to maintain, and they allow for plenty of light to enter through the adjustable slats, that opens up the space. They are also durable, available in a variety of colours, and inexpensive.

    • Dormitory Rooms. With so many students living in dorms and are away from home 75-80% of the time, living space is major when such small space has to be divided between one or more students. To open up the space, add mini blinds. They will alter the amount of incoming light at the same time provide an open exterior view.

    • Efficiency apartments. In a small living space such as an efficiency apartment, the amount of light that is allowed into the unit can either break or make the feel of the room. If the area is dim, it will make the room seem small. But with any type of blind of your choice, plenty of natural light will be emitted into the living quarters; opening up the space and making it appear larger.

With a bit of creativity, window treatments can perform changes that are inexpensive and uncomplicated. Just by the removal of one element and the replacement of another, it can be opened up for more enjoyment and better use.
