One new low-flow toilet is more of a curiosity than something you might want to add to your bathroom, but I’m passing along information about it, because it is beginning to appear in new-home design centers. TotoUSA’s Neorest integrated toilet has a lid that automatically opens whenever an individual approaches it. When the individual rises, the lid closes automatically, and the unit flushes. The toilet has a bellows in the tank, and instead of having the handle on the side, it has a tennis-ball-size gizmo on the lid for flushing. The research center testing was limited to one-piece or twopiece gravity-flow toilets that could be compared to 3.5 gallon toilets. Some toilets functioned well; others did poorly. Center researchers developed a “clog index.”Where each toilet placed on a scale of 1 to 150 was based on how easily the toilet got rid of the sponges and wads of paper that were used in the rigorous testing.
